Cambodia to light up 70 percent of households by 2030

12/05/2008 -- 9:38 PM

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Cambodian government has set a target to provide electricity to 70 percent of households by 2030.

About 18 percent of the households, mainly in the capital city and major cities and towns, currently have access to electricity.

According to the Cambodian Ministry of Energy and Mining and the National Electricity Company, all villages nationwide will be able to access the national power grid following it being put into operation in 2020.

To obtain the target, the government has called for local and foreign investment to build 21 hydro-power and thermal power plants, of which 14 plants with a combined capacity of 1,850MW will be built at a cost of 3.2 billion USD.

The electricity demand for national economic development increased by 7 times in 12 years from 30MW in 1995 to 212.50MW in 2007. Developing electricity is one of top priorities in the government’s action plan to maintain sustainable economic development and contribute to reducing poverty and improving living conditions in rural areas.-Enditem
