Thailand elects new House Speaker

Hanoi (VNA) - Thailand's House of Representatives on May 12 elected parliamentarian Chai Chidchob as a new House Speaker, after Yongyuth Tiyapairat resigned from the post pending trial on electoral fraud charges against him. Thailand's new Speaker of the House gained the top post in the legislative assembly with a majority of 283 votes as compared with 158 votes for Banya Bantadthan, Deputy Advisory Chairman of the Democarat Party, according to Thailand’s news agency (TNA). The balloting ended with 12 abstentions registered. It was noted some of the abstaining votes belonged to members of the Chat Thai Party, which is one of the coalition government partners, TNA reported.-Enditem
