Fifteen dead in southwest China earthquake

Beijing (VNA) - Death toll from an earthquake in southwest China’s Sichuan province and Chongging Municipality on May 12 has risen to 15, Xinhua news agency reported.

The news agency quoted a spokesman with the Gansu Provincial Department of Civil Affairs as saying that 10 people in Pingliang and Longnan were killed by collapsed buildings and 14 others seriously injured.

Previously, Xinhua cited local governments as saying that four students in Chongqing and one person in Sichuan died while more than 100 students were reportedly injured.

According to the State Seismological Bureau (SSB), the earthquake jolting Sichuan province measured 7.8 on the richter scale.-Enditem
