Vietnamese in Germany raise funds for hometown

13/05/2008 -- 10:55 AM

Berlin (VNA) – An association of Germany-based Vietnamese from the northern port city of Hai Phong plans to raise 60 million VND to build houses for two poor families in the city’s Vinh Bao district.

The target was set at the group’s fifth congress held in Berlin on May 12, where members also discussed tasks for the year including increasing membership, assisting each other in daily life and career and upholding traditional culture and national identity.

Association Head Nguyen Van Dung reported at the meeting that since foundation five years ago, the group has become a source of important moral support for its members while providing aid for disadvantaged households and encouraging younger generations in study, thus enhancing solidarity and connecting them with their home country.

To date, the association has contributed a total of 8,000 Euros to support the disadvantaged elderly and Agent Orange/dioxin victims in Hai Phong, Dung said.

The congress, attended by Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Tran Duc Mau and over 300 delegates, elected an 11 member executive committee for the next term, with Hoang Viet Dung nominated as president.-Enditem
