Southern province to make carbon black

13/05/2008 -- 10:55 AM

Ba Ria-Vung Tau (VNA) – A new factory manufacturing carbon black has been slated to open in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau .

The plant will be able to produce up to 110,000 tonnes of carbon black a year.

Three Vietnamese companies including the Southern Rubber Industry Joint Stock Co. (Casumina), the Da Nang Rubber Co. and the Sao Vang Rubber Joint Stock Co. signed an agreement late last week with India ’s Phillips Carbon Black Ltd to establish a joint venture for carbon black production.

The joint venture has capital totalling 65 million USD and will be the first company to make the material for rubber tyre production in Vietnam . The three Vietnamese companies will hold 22 percent of the joint venture’s capital.

Half of the factory’s yield will be used domestically, and the rest will be exported to the Republic of Korea and Japan .

The joint venture will also establish a 16MW generator using waste from the carbon black factory.

Previously, Vinachem set up a similar project, at a cost of 40 million USD, for a carbon black plant in Dung Quat Industrial Zone using waste from the Dung Quat Refinery. Seventy percent of the plant’s capacity of 100,000 tonnes per year will be consumed domestically. The other 30 percent will be exported.

Every year, Vietnam imports 50,000 tonnes of carbon black worth 60 million USD.

Upon completion of the two projects, Vietnam will be able to meet domestic demand for rubber tyre production and will also have material available for export.-Enditem
