Farmers to be assisted to minimise difficulties

13/05/2008 -- 11:41 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – The Party is committed to greater support for farmers in recognition of their important role in ensuring food security and contribution to the national construction of Vietnam .

“Farmers are due to receive more care, more benefits from the country’s development and assistance to minimise their difficulties and disadvantages from the market fluctuation,” Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Truong Tan Sang remarked during his working session with the Vietnam Farmers’ Association in Hanoi on May 12.

He said the recent world food market fluctuations have helped Vietnam understand more about the significance of food security and the government is preparing to respond by management and policy changes that benefit agriculture, farmers and rural areas.

“The Party and State will take focal tasks in the coming time to reduce the number of poor families in rural areas and develop a modern, safe and cultural life in rural areas,” said the official.

He asked the Farmers’ Association to do everything possible to help farmers restructure production and access advanced technologies in order to create competitive products. He said the association should coordinate with localities to accelerate vocational training programmes for farmers.

Statistics show that those living in poverty represent 18 percent of Vietnam ’s total population, of which 90 percent are farmers.

Many farmers have very little or no land for production and most rural labourers are engaged in manual and low-productive work.-Enditem
