Need for promulgation of atomic energy law

13/05/2008 -- 4:41 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – National Assembly’s Scientific, Technological and Environment Committee has stressed the need for a law on atomic energy in order to develop and apply atomic energy to serve socio-economic development.

The committee presented the draft Law on Atomic Energy at the on-going National Assembly meeting in Hanoi on May 13.

The draft, which has 12 chapters and 98 articles, stipulates activities related to atomic energy, development and application of atomic energy, as well as the transport, import and export of radioactive substances.

It also encourages Vietnamese and foreign organisations and individuals to invest in developing and applying radiation in health care, agriculture, environmental protection and nuclear electricity production.

While almost all deputies agreed with the content of the draft law, they suggested the need for more detailed stipulations on human resource management in the sector as well as State involvement to ensure nuclear safety.

The government has already begun implementing a strategy on atomic energy for peaceful purposes, by instructing the Vietnam Electricity Group to develop investment projects to construct two nuclear power plants.

Director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute Vuong Huu Tan said the first nuclear electricity plant, with a capacity of 4,000 MW, will be built in Ninh Thuan province in 2015 and become operational in 2020.

Earlier the same day, the NA discussed the draft law on Red Cross activities.-Endtem
