13/05/2008 -- 5:49 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - Opportunities for cooperation in trade and forestry between Vietnam and Bulgaria were tabled for discussion at a meeting between officials from the two countries in Hanoi on May 13.

In the meeting with Head of the State Forestry Agency of Bulgaria Stephen Yurukov, Vietnamese Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat said farm produce, particularly tropical fruits, was among Vietnam ’s major export staples to Bulgaria .

The minister named numerous items that Vietnam is able to import from Bulgaria , including wheat, breeds of chicken, veterinary medicines, insecticides, urea fertilizer and farming machinery.

“However, Vietnam ’s export turnover of farming products to Bulgaria is still modest and mainly through a third country,” the minister remarked.

The Vietnamese side suggested a plan to build joint ventures in Bulgaria to process and distribute coffee, tea, tinned fruits to Bulgaria and its Eastern European neighbours.

In recognising the importance of forests to both their countries, Minister Phat and Head of the State Yurukov discussed the potential to set up a flexible cooperation mechanisms in the interest for both countries.

Minister Phat noted the Vietnamese government’s attention to protecting and planting forests, saying this has led to forest coverage increasing to 39 percent in 2007 from 28 percent in 1995.

Minister Phat acknowledged the value of Vietnam ’s 13 million hectares of forests in protecting the environment, creating jobs and reducing poverty, but added that Vietnam has not yet fully transferred the forest growth into economic development.

Yurukov said forests acreage represents one-third of his country’s territory and wild beast breeding is the forte of his country.

During his working visit from May 12-16, the Bulgarian Head of State has had working sessions with the Rangers’ Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Forestry University and made fact finding tours of several localities.-Enditem
