Hanoi (VNA) – A Vietnamese agency in charge of US-sprayed dioxin aftermaths has reported that high and very high dioxin levels have been found in blood, fat and milk of those who have been exposed to Agent Orange/dioxin.
The information was provided by the office of the National Steering Board overseeing the overcoming of the aftermath of toxic chemicals sprayed by the US troop in the Vietnam War.
The office added that the high dioxin levels have especially been found in people who live near areas currently having high elevated 2,3,7,8 –tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin TCDD and 1,2,3,7,8 PeCDD (pentadioxin) levels.
It has then affirmed that dioxin found in those people originated from Agent Orange/dioxin the US troop used in the Vietnam War.
According to the office, Vietnamese and Japanese scientists had jointly conducted several epidemiological research related to the consequences of dioxin, including a project carried out on 47,000 Agent Orange/dioxin-exposed and non-exposed war veterans.
They figured out that dioxin-related diseases that had been recognised by the US National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine have been found in Agent Orange/dioxin victims in Vietnam .
These scientists noticed a higher rate of birth defects, congenital deformities and other diseases in Agent Orange/dioxin victims than in non-exposed people.
They also found children aged between 6 and 9 living near dioxin-contaminated areas have had a lower IQ indicator than their peers living in other areas.
Disease-affected structure, percentage and illness frequency of Vietnamese Agent Orange /dioxin victims are also higher than Agent Orange/dioxin-exposed war veterans in the US , New Zealand , and the Republic of Korea , the scientists said.
The scientist pointed to the fact that Vietnamese Agent Orange /dioxin victims have been exposed to this toxic defoliant at higher level than those US , New Zealand and RoK victims for years due to difficult living conditions caused by wars.
For their part, Vietnamese scientists had conducted their own studies, having detected biological modifications in Agent Orange/dioxin-exposed people, especially the indication of deficiency in immune system, and changes in chromosome and gene pools, including genes causing cancers.-Enditem
