Officials from Mekong basin, Japan meet in Laos

13/05/2008 -- 8:43 PM

Vientiane (VNA) – Officials from the four Mekong basin countries and Japan gathered in Vientiane on May 13 for their first senior official meeting to discuss multilateral cooperation.

Following on from the first Mekong-Japan ministerial meeting held in Tokyo earlier this year, the delegates reviewed developments in the East-West and the South-South economic corridor cooperation.

They discussed trade, investment and tourism cooperation under the framework of both economic corridors as well as the facilitation of socio-economic development.

The exchange of goods among sub-regional countries with assistance from a Japan-ASEAN fund worth 20 million USD was also an agenda item.

The one-day meeting emphasised the importance of cooperation among the member countries, in particular, noting relations with Japan as an important element for boosting socio-economic development of ASEAN new members and narrowing economic gaps among ASEAN.

The officials from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and Japan were joined by representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).-Enditem
