Hanoi (VNA) – A spokesman of the Ministry of Public Security (MoPS) announced that the investigation security agency on May 12 took legal proceedings against two former police officers and two journalists on charge of breach of laws in relation to the Project Management Unit (PMU) 18 case.
They included Pham Xuan Quac, 62, former Head of the MoPS’s Department C14; Dinh Van Huynh, 50, former chief of Division 9 of the MoPS’s Department C14; Nguyen Viet Chien, 56, reporter of Thanh Nien (Young People); and Nguyen Van Hai, 33, reporter of Tuoi Tre (Youth), MoPS spokesman Major General Vu Thanh Hoa said on May 13.
They were charged with “abuse of power while on duty” in accordance to Article 281 of the Penal Code, the MoPS spokesman stated.
When the PMU 18 case was brought to light, newspapers massively carried news and stories related to corruption, bribery by State officials, including a story entitled “Bui Tien Dung confesses to give money to close to 40 important figures in order to escape from a court sentence”.
Recognising the seriousness of the said information, the MoPS instructed relevant agencies to investigate into the truth of the information reported.
Investigators have found that there were false information, including those that were under check by policemen and those were not mentioned in the case record.
In this connection, Dinh The Huynh, President of the Vietnam Journalists’ Association said “One of the association’s functions is to defend legitimate rights and interests and rights to professional practise of reporters in accordance with laws and the association’s regulations, and we have to protect legitimate rights and interests of reporters on the basis of law.”-Enditem
