· The United Nations Day of Vesak kicks off in Hanoi on May 14 (Nhan dan, p1).

· Earmarking an additional 260 billion VND to buy food for reserve (Ha Noi Moi, p1). Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has decided to provide an additional amount for the Finance Ministry to buy enough food for this year’s national reserve.

· Expanding the Da Nang and Chu Lai International Airports (Saigon Giai phong, p1).

The Vietnamese garments and textiles sector is estimated to continue its strong growth in the next 20 years. It, however, has so far this year faced many difficulties, particularly price hike, limited labour resources and fierce competition.

· Finding outlets in Africa, Western and Southern regions in Asia (Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam , No. 115, p6). The African, Western and Southern Asian Markets Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade estimates 2008 export turnover to the regions to reach 2.3 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 33 percent.

· Shortage of pilots (Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam , No. 115, p13). According to aviation experts, the establishment of a series of airlines on the Vietnamese airspace such as Saigon Air, Vina AirAsia and VietJet is a breakthrough of the Vietnamese aviation sector. However, with the current growth pace, the industry will certainly face shortage in human resource, particularly pilots.

· Managing monetary circulation in line with the target of curbing inflation (Thoi bao Tai chinh [Financial Times], No. 57, p3). Public opinion is focusing on recent moves of the State Bank of Vietnam as it gave out hundreds of millions of USD, drawing back a huge volume of Vietnam dong while injecting tens of trillion VND into commercial banks.

· When will there be “commercial justice” for farmers? (Thoi bao Tai chinh, No. 57, p6).

· 2008 economic forecast for Vietnam : inflation and trade gap still stand at high rates (Thoi bao Tai chinh, No. 57, p12).

· Real estate projects in Ho Chi Minh City : many investors give up “the game” in spite of financial loss (Dai Doan Ket [Great Unity], No. 72, p1). The real estate market in HCM City has never been as “gloomy” as at present, being contrary to its boom 4-5 months ago. Many investors, who even paid 10 percent of total cost of a projected apartment, decided to “give up the game”.
