Australia grants over 35 mln USD to Indonesian farmers

14/05/2008 -- 11:38 AM

Jakarta (VNA) - The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) has allocated 38 million Australian dollars (roughly 35.7 million USD) to help increase productivity and earnings of farmers in four eastern Indonesian provinces, local media reported.

The provinces are West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi , the Jakarta Post newspaper said.

"The 38 million AUD programme is aimed at farmers to help them utilise market opportunities and to increase the added value of their agricultural products," AusAID minister-counselor in Indonesia Blair Exell was cited as saying on May 13.

The funding is part of the Australian-Indonesian Partnership programme known as the Smallholder Agribusiness Development Initiative (SADI).

It aims to improve farmers access to technology for rural enterprises, improve business practices and address critical constraints such as market access, finance and infrastructure gaps.- Enditem
