Pilot programme succeeds in reforming drug addicts

14/05/2008 -- 4:10 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Tens of thousands of former drug addicts now contribute to the workforce following the success of a pilot treatment and training project for rehabilitated drug users.

At a press conference on prostitution prevention and detoxification for drug addicts in Hanoi on May 13, Director of the Department for Social Evil Prevention Nguyen Van Minh said Ho Chi Minh City is the first among seven localities to implement the pilot project, which was approved by the Prime Minister in 2006.

The HCM City project helped provide jobs for more than 9,300 ex-addicts, who now earn an average of 800,000-2,000,000 VND each per month.

A Hanoi-based project, approved later than the HCM City project, has also obtained marked achievements in the work.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Quang Ninh, Tay Ninh, Long An and Binh Duong provinces are currently completing infrastructure and beginning to implement similar programmes to manage former drug addicts.-Enditem
