Indonesia to deploy 140 peacekeepers to Darfur

14/05/2008 -- 4:34 PM

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia will send an advance team from its Formed Police Unit (FPU) to join the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in the troubled region of Darfur in Sudan this week, said local media.

In closely monitoring the situation in Darfur, Indonesia expresses its deep concern over the humanitarian conditions in the region caused by ongoing conflict, Indonesian Foreign Ministry's Director for International Security and Disarmament Affairs Desra Percaya was cited by the Jakarta Post newspaper as saying.

He added Indonesia welcomes and fully supports the adoption of the UN Resolution 1769 (2007) on establishment of the African Union and United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

He stressed, however, peacekeeping alone is not enough and it must be accompanied by inclusive dialogue and a political process.

Indonesia has been actively involved in 24 UN peacekeeping missions across the world.- Enditem
