14/05/2008 -- 5:22 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam convened the third international exhibition on nuclear power in Hanoi on May 14 with hope of garnering a wide range of field experiences for the building of its first nuclear power plant.

Addressing the event, Minister of Sciences and Technology Hoang Van Phong said his ministry has submitted a bill on nuclear power to the ongoing third session of the National Assembly in a bid to formulate a legal foundation for nuclear energy-related applications and development in the country.

He reported that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is racing against time to complete its report on investment sources and construction of the first nuclear power plant, which is targeted to begin operation in 2020.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, the nuclear energy company of Canada, the Guangdong nuclear power company of China and companies from the Republic of Korea, Japan, Russia, France and Vietnam are all participating in the event which will run in Hanoi until May 17.

The first and second nuclear power exhibitions took place in Hanoi in 2004 and then 2006.-Enditem
