China mobilises all to battle against disaster

Hanoi (VNA) - The worst earthquake to hit China in three decades has mobilised the entire nation to battle against the disaster, Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao flew to Chengdu, the capital of the quake-hit Sichuan province, immediately after the disaster on May 12.

Thousands of troops have also converged on the tremor-affected areas and are working around-the-clock to remove debris and reach the quake victims. Doctors, nurses, policemen, repair workers and volunteers have congregated in Sichuan, and tonnes of bottled water, milk, instant noodles, and other relief materials have been trucked in and airdropped to the quake-hit areas.

Xinhua reported a senior Sichuan Provincial government official’s has said the earthquake death toll in the province has exceeded 14,000.

Vice Governor of Sichuan, Li Chengyun, told a news conference that the death toll, based on incomplete figures, tallied 14,463 by 4.00pm on May 14.

He said another 14,051 were missing, 25,788 buried in debris, and 64,746 injured.-Enditem
