Family planning to address national birth rate

15/05/2008 -- 11:03 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – The Minister of Public Health on May 14 asked the General Department of Population to help immediately deploy five population and family planning missions in response to high national birth rates.

The missions, headed by Deputy Ministers of Public Health, will begin their work in localities from May 20.

According to a recent report by the ministry, the number of newborns in the first quarter of this year increased by 18,000, representing an increase of 7.2 percent year on year.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were among the 39 provinces and cities nationwide criticized for the highest birth rates. The capital city posted a newborn growth of 27.6 percent while the rate in the nation’s southern hub reached 30.2 percent. The rate was 40 percent for northern Son La province and 41 percent for southern Soc Trang province.

In an effort to solve the problems, a master plan on population quality improvement is being developed with a focus on raising public awareness of family planning and the consequences of intentional gender selection.-Enditem
