Myanmar new constitution approved in referendum

15/05/2008 -- 5:41 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Myanmar announced on May 15 that its draft constitution has won overwhelming support among the 278 townships who so far have voted in the nationwide referendum.

Myanmar’s state television reported that 92.4 percent of voters, a total of over 20.7 million votes, approved the draft constitution in an initial nationwide referendum held across the country on May 10.

The referendum, held by the Commission for Holding Nationwide Referendum, has been put off until a later date in 40 townships in Yangon division and 7 townships in the Ayeyawaddy division due to the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.

The draft constitution will be ratified if it wins over 50 percent approval when all eligible citizens have voted.

The 2008 constitution of Myanmar, prepared by a 54-member State Constitution Drafting Commission, will lead to a general election in 2010.- Enditem
