RoK to have bird flu vaccine plant next year

15/05/2008 -- 5:41 PM

Seoul (VNA) – The Republic of Korea (RoK) plans to build a large plant for the production of avian influenza vaccine in a stepped-up effort to prevent the deadly poultry disease infecting humans, local health officials said May 15.

The plant, to be located in Hwasun, about 340 kilometres southwest of Seoul, is expected to produce enough vaccine for around 20 million patients a year, Yonhap news agency cited a report by the RoK Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs to the parliament.

Construction of the vaccine factory will be completed by the end of next year, the report said.

The plan comes as RoK struggles to contain the deadly poultry disease, which led the nation to cull around 7 million birds since the first outbreak of the year was discovered on April 1.

The RoK government is increasingly concerned that bird flu will spread nationwide after the outbreak of the fatal disease was reported in the southwestern regions of the country and several cases confirmed in major cities like Seoul and Busan.- Enditem
