15/05/2008 -- 9:19 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on May 14 held a meeting on Myanmar at the UN headquarters in New York to find ways to provide humanitarian aid more efficiently to the cyclone-hit country.

The meeting focused on the rescue and relief operations in Myanmar in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis and difficulties hindering foreign aid efforts to help Myanmar’s victims, according to news agencies.

The Secretary General has also suggested establishing a UN-ASEAN joint humanitarian coordinator to create a logistical hub outside Myanmar.

Ban told media he was considering sending Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes to Myanmar with a World Food Programme airplane carrying relief supplies.

In addition to the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the five permanent members of the Security Council (the US, Britain, France, China and Russia), major donors such as Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), India and Bangladesh attended the meeting.

Myanmar state television raised its official death toll from Cyclone Nargis which hit the Southeast Asian country to 38,491 dead, with 27,838 others missing.-Enditem
