Kon Tum (VNA) – A group of about 10 wild tigers entered forested areas in two villages in Kon Tum province last month and ate 15 cows and buffaloes that belonged to local residents.
The tigers were looking for food, said A Nhoong, chairman of the Dak Blo Commune People’s Committee.
The residents live in Bung Ton and Bung Kon villages in Dak Glei District’s Dak Blo Commune.
After the owners notified authorities that the animals had been missing since mid-April, the Dak Blo Commune People’s Committee asked a group of young people to search for them.
They then found tiger footprints in two forested areas near the villages, as well as cow and buffalo bones.
The head of Bung Kon Village estimated that there had been about 10 tigers in the area.
After the footprints were identified, local residents beat gongs and drums to scare any remaining tigers away.
Residents said the tigers might have come from Laos , which borders the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum.
Dak Blo Commune, located at the western slope of the Truong Son (Cordillera Range), a mountain range extending through Laos, Vietnam and northeast Cambodia, is the poorest commune in Dak Glei District.
The Dak Blo Commune People’s Committee has petitioned the district People’s Committee to offer financial support to the families who lost their animals.
Forest rangers will teach local residents how to prevent serious accidents that could occur when tigers enter the area.
In 2003, a group of tigers caught and ate five cows in Dak Blo Commune, according to local residents.-Enditem
