Hanoi (VNA) – About 2,000 people are expected to lock up their motorbikes and head for the nearest bus stop on May 16 as Hanoi kicks off its first-ever Green Transport Day.
The event, organised by non-profit group Action for the City, aims to raise public awareness on air pollution caused by vehicles and get more people on public transport or bicycle. “At a time when traffic is a serious concern for everyone in Hanoi , Green Transport Day offers us a chance to change our daily habit and lifestyles,” executive director of Action for the City Dang Huong Giang said.
The day had received a lot of support from the inhabitants in the city, especially university students, Giang said. “Many students have been organising campaigns in their schools, presenting talks and displaying posters.
Every little bit of support was useful, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Pham Khoi Nguyen said. “Even the smallest efforts can make a big impact on the environment,” he said.
The initiative received an award during the World Bank’s Vietnam Innovation Day 2007, as well as funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
Action for the City was first set up under the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Association and approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology on January 12, 2007. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for all in Hanoi and other cities in Vietnam by increasing community participation and advocating green policies.-Enditem
