CO2 emissions lower than regional, world levels

05/06/2008 -- 6:57 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s carbon dioxide emissions are lower than regional and global levels, according to the country’s first report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

According to scientists, while Vietnam’s CO2 emissions have increased from 21.4 million to 98.6 million tones, its annual carbon dioxide emissions per capita amount to 1.2 tonnes per year, less than the worldwide average of 4.5 tonnes per head.

It is also less than other regional nations, such as Singapore’s 12.4 tonnes per capita.

Increasing carbon dioxide levels due to human activities is the main reason for global climate change, the scientists said.

With 15 percent of the world’s total population, rich nations release 45 percent of global CO2 amount into the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, developing countries that constitute one-third of the world’s population produce seven percent of the world’s total CO2 emissions.

Vice Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Science, Technology and Environment, Nghiem Vu Khai, says the picture of Vietnam’s own climate change is becoming clearer.

In addition to storms, floods and severe droughts, coastal low-land regions will be submerged and sea water will inundate the Mekong delta, Khai said.

Poor people and developing nations will become the most vulnerable victims and suffer the heaviest consequences of global climate change while they themselves are not main reasons of this change.-Enditem
