05/06/2008 -- 9:14 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – A new government directive asks authorities to shut down operations of those establishments that fail to prevent environmental pollution or don’t handle pollution problems within a certain period of time.

Under Directive No 17/2008/CT-TTg issued on June 5, the Prime Minister has asked ministries, Government agencies and provincial-level People’s Committees to take urgent measures accelerate treatment of those establishments that cause severe environmental pollution nationwide by 2012.

The directive, which sets targets up to 2012, requires authorities to boost environmental pollution prevention and control, supervise and limit the appearance of establishments causing environmental pollution while ensuring sustainable economic development.

Authorities were also asked to finalise a legal system and policies on thoroughly dealing with establishments that cause severe environmental pollution.-Enditem
