Hospital ship anchors to deliver health care

19/06/2008 -- 7:18 PM

Khanh Hoa (VNA) - With more than 650 health workers aboard, the US hospital ship USNS Mercy docked in central Khanh Hoa province on June 19 to begin a 10-day humanitarian mission.

The volunteer doctors will work with Khanh Hoa provincial medical staff to provide free medical check-ups and treat thousands of local people.

They will also perform free operations on 120 harelipped and cleft palate children from Khanh Hoa and neighbouring Ninh Thuan province.

The task is part of the Pacific Partnership project jointly conducted by the US army, non-government organisations and the governments of Australia, Canada, the Republic of Korea and Singapore.

In addition, participating health workers and construction engineers will help repair and upgrade a number of medical centres and schools in Nha Trang city and Dien Khanh district.

The foreign experts will also hold professional development workshops with their local colleagues.-Enditem
