25/06/2008 -- 10:52 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – An earthquake measured at 3.7 degree on the Richter scale occurred in the Gulf of Tonkin on June 24, according to the Institute of Geophysics .

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 20.39 degrees northern latitude and 107.7 degrees eastern longitude at the depth of 19.9 km, about 80 km away to the east of Hai Phong city.

The earthquake, started at 07.10 am (local time), occurred deeply in the sea so it did not bring any danger to the nearby people and constructional works.

Last year, an earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred in the same area, said the former Director of the Institute of Geophysics , Nguyen Ngoc Thuy.

According to the Institute’s report, earthquakes measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale have happened mostly in the Tonkin Gulf over the past several decades.-Enditem
