Cuba certifies lung cancer treatment

26/06/2008 -- 5:24 PM

Havana (VNA) – A drug for treating patients with advanced lung cancer has been certified by Cuba’s Centre for State Control of Drugs, according to a Cuban immunologist.

Dr Gisela Gonzalez from the Centre of Molecular Immunology said the CimaVax-EGF vaccine passed several clinical tests with positive responses from patients who showed an improvement, the Prensa Latina reported on June 25.

Gonzalez said the drug does not cause severe side-effects and triggers an immune response, increasing the life expectancy to around four to six months along with improving the quality of life of the patient.

Research on the Cimavax EGF vaccine began in 1992, with the first clinical test in 1995. The vaccine has been undergoing clinical trials at several hospitals in Cuba, Peru and Malaysia. It has also been registered in Canada, the United States, Japan, Australia and Brazil.-Enditem
