27/06/2008 -- 4:41 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Duong Anh Vu made history as the first Vietnamese player to win the Asian Billiards 3-Cushion Championship on Wednesday in Seoul .

Vu, ranked 31 in the world, met little difficulty in the final against Arai Tatsuo, ranked 79, winning 3-0.

In the semi-final match earlier, Vu came from behind to beat the Republic of Korea ’s Kim Kyung-roul, who is ranked eighth in the world and was the tournament favourite.

Kim, to the delight of the spectators, quickly won the first set. However, Vu came back in the second before winning the third after a rare mistake by Kim.

It was the second time Vu has beaten players from the Republic of Korea . His first triumph was in the 2006 Asian Games.

In the all-Japanese other semi-final, Tatsuo trounced Funaki Kouji.

Meanwhile, Vu’s compatriot Tran Chi Thanh lost in the qualifying round earlier in the week to Asian Games champion Umeda Ryuuji of Japan .

Vu is Vietnam’s top player. He won two gold medals at the 2007 national championship’s in the 1-and 3-cushion events. He also triumphed at the Asian Indoor Games 3 in Macau and the 24 th Southeast Asian Games last year.

The HCM City-born athlete, who is also the National Top Cueists Tournament 2007 defending champion, is unchallenged domestically in 3-cushion billiards.-Enditem
