Vietnam Red Cross receives widespread support

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) in the past six months carried out 29 humanitarian programmes with a total capital of 98 billion VND raised by both domestic and international benefactors.

The news was announced by VRC Vice President and Secretary General Doan Van Thai at the organisation’s conference on July 1.

Thai named some of outstanding benefactors, including the World Wheelchair Organisation and the International Committee of the Red Cross with 480 wheelchairs for disabled people and Agent Orange victims.

Other Red Cross societies and non-governmental organisations from Switzerland , France and the Republic of Korea also presented medicines, provided free medical treatment or financed projects to supply safe water for the poor, plant mangrove forests, and etc.

The VRC has prepared nearly 30 other projects to be introduced at a meeting of donors slated for August 28 in Hanoi .

Over the recent past, the VRC has donated nearly 400,000 USD to China and Myanmar to help earthquake victims in Sichuan province and Nargis typhoon victims to return to normal life.

In the first six months of 2008, the VRC has raised 149 billion VND for poor families to overcome difficulties and poor children to get better education.-Enditem
