Joint environment project highlighted at ECOSOC

03/07/2008 -- 9:40 PM

New York (VNA) – A Vietnam-Belgium cooperative project on environmental hygiene was introduced to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)’s annual meeting as a success of international cooperation.

Presenting the project to the ECOSOC in New York on July 2, Belgian Minister for Cooperation and Development Charles Michel, explained that Vietnam is one of the countries that have suffered environmental pressures due to rapid urbanisation.

For that reason, the Belgian government had together with the Vietnamese side selected the 6-million-people Ho Chi Minh City with numerous social, environmental, and managerial problems to implement the environment hygiene project.

Carried out from 1998 to 2006, the 25 million USD Vietnam-Belgium project had addressed the collection and treatment of wastes on Tan Hoa-Lo Gom canal in Ho Chi Minh City in addition to expanding the canal and building houses for poor people living on both sides of the canal.

More than 500 delegates from around the world came to the ECOSOC’s this year meeting, which run from June 30 to July 3.

The meeting dealt mostly with issues relating to sustainable development, especially impacts of climate changes.-Enditem
