USAID committed to long-term aid for Vietnam

HCM City (VNA) - US Agency for International Development (USAID) Director Henrietta H. Fore has pledged to continue long-term cooperation with Vietnam regarding development assistance through new forms.

The USAID official made the commitment in Ho Chi Minh City on July 5 before ending her three-day visit to the country.

At a meeting with Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Tai, Fore talked of the development of the private sector and its involvement in dealing with social and community-related issues.

Measures to mobilise strength of the state and private economic sectors as well as non-governmental organisations are expected to top the agenda in USAID’s cooperation porgamme with Vietnam , she noted.

The USAID director told her host that US companies are willing to provide and transfer healthcare and social services in addition to expanding their business activities Vietnam.

During her trip to HCM City, Fore visited a drug detoxification centre using methadone that is funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

She applauded joint efforts of the Vietnamese Government and the city in helping drug addicts give up the habit and integrate into the community, thereby reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and drug-related crimes.-Enditem
