Australia helps boost world agriculture supplies

13/07/2008 -- 9:37 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said on July 13 that his government will provide 50 million Australian dollars (48 million USD) to boost agriculture in developing countries.

The funding was necessary to boost ailing world food supplies in an attempt to help those countries which have been suffering from recent food price hikes, he was quoted as saying in a statement.

"It is critical that poor farmers in developing countries get the support they need to increase plantings," Smith said, adding "without this support, the high costs of fuel, fertilizers and seeds will cause them to cut back on planting, exacerbating pressure on food prices."

According to the statement, the funding will be distributed through the newly established World Bank trust fund.-Enditem
