Malaysia affirms non-interference in Thai internal affairs

16/07/2008 -- 10:55 AM

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Malaysia has reaffirmed its position that the ongoing insurgency in the southern Thai is an internal problem of the country.

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Najib Tun Razak said his country respected the cardinal principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of its neighbours.

Speaking at the 48th Malaysia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Bangkok on July 15, Deputy PM Najib Tun Razak said Malaysia's offer of assistance was conveyed to Thai PM Samak Sundaravej by Malaysian PM Abdullah Ahmad Badawi during Samak's visit in March.

The Malaysian Deputy PM said the Malaysian government was willing to share its experiences with Thailand, in dealing with threats from militants and extremist groups.

At a press conference later, Thai PM Samak said no new measure to jointly tackle the southern problem was discussed at the meeting, although various agencies were asked to submit progress reports on the ongoing cooperation.

The meeting also covered the discussion of dual nationality, PM Samak added.

More than 3,300 people have died by violence in three Thai southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani since January 2004.-Enditem
