Gantry collapse kills seven

16/07/2008 -- 11:23 AM

Quang Ninh (VNA) - Seven people died and another was seriously injured on July 15 when a gantry collapsed at Cai Lan Port in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Damage is estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The victims were workers with the Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation (Lilama). The only survivor, Mai Ngoc Thanh, is being treated at Ha Long City’s Bai Chay General Hospital .

The gantry was one of two imported from China for lifting containers on and off ships. They replaced two damaged by a whirlwind storm in November 2006.
Quang Ninh Port Authorities hired Vietnam National Shipping Line’s Falcol Company to transport and erect the gantries, but it subcontracted the job to Lilama.

Police are still not sure what caused the accident.-Enditem
