Indonesia not to import rice this year

16/07/2008 -- 4:55 PM

Jakarta (VNA) – It is unnecessary for Indonesia to import rice this year because the country will enjoy a dry unhusked rice surplus of 2 million tonnes, the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry has said.

The optimism was based on the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS)’s forecast that Indonesia’s rice output in 2008 would increase by 4.76 percent from a year earlier, Director General of Food Crops Sutarto Alimoeso said on July 15.

The BPS has projected the country’s dry unhusked rice production this year to reach 59.88 million tonnes, up by 2.72 million tonnes from 2007 due to an increase in the rice-growing area by 237,610 hectares and an increase in the productivity of paddy field by 130 kg/hectare.

Last year, Indonesia enjoyed a surplus of 1.5 million tonnes of rice, the official added. –Enditem
