UN envoy invited to visit Myanmar

16/07/2008 -- 8:51 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - The United Nations on July 15 said its envoy to Myanmar has received an official invitation to travel to the country in mid-August, according to sources from the UN.

Ibrahim Gambari, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon's special adviser, received a letter of invitation to visit the country from Myanmar's authorities in mid-August, said Marie Okabe, the international body's deputy spokeswoman.

''Gambari looks forward to returning to Myanmar on behalf of the secretary general,'' said Okabe, who explained the visit was originally slated to take place in late May but was postponed by devastating Cyclone Nargis that struck the country in early May.

''Discussions are ongoing regarding the precise timing, programme and objectives of his visit,'' she added.

Gambari last traveled to Myanmar in March but it led to no concrete results. The upcoming visit is the third by the UN envoy since last September.-Enditem
