Strategy on precursor chemicals control in the pipeline

16/07/2008 -- 10:18 PM

HCM City (VNA) - A strategy on preventing a leakage of precursor chemicals in the chemical industry was a major topic of a seminar held in Ho Chi Minh City on July 16.

Speaking at the event, Wong Hoy Yuen, Coordinator of the East Asia Project on precursor chemicals under the UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), said Vietnam should build a national strategy to bind the chemical industry with a task to prevent the leakage of precursor chemicals.

He also pledged to help relevant agencies in Vietnam in preventing a leakage of precursors in the chemical industry.

UNODC joined with the Vietnam Executive Agency for Drug Control in co-sponsoring the event.

In 2007, Vietnam confiscated 7,500 kg of precursor and 5,750 grammes of ephedrine.

In 2008, police discovered cases where offenders processed or reprocessed amphetamine. Haiphong police, for example, seized seven kg of chemicals that offenders used to mix with 14.37 kg of amphetamine.--Enditem
