17/07/2008 -- 9:06 PM

Phnom Penh (VNA) - The Japanese government has announced a combined grant of 897,247 USD for two Japanese non-governmental organisations (NGO) to carry out education and demining projects.

Of the total grant, 153,195 USD was given to the School Aid Japan (SAJ) to construct school buildings in Battambang district of Battambang province, the Cambodian news agency (AKP) reported.

The new buildings will provide over 800 students with an improved studying environment.

The remainder worth 744,052 USD came to the Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) to support Community-Based Demining (CBD) in Kamrieng district, Battambang province.

The project is to operate three demining teams in Battambang, one of the most heavily mine affected provinces in Cambodia with the highest number of casualties. The villagers in the area will be recruited to take part in the community-based demining activity.

It is estimated that the project will benefit over 5,000 villagers.-Enditem
