‘Technical error’ to blame for gantry collapse

21/07/2008 -- 10:02 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – Authorities have prosecuted the people responsible for the collapse of the gantry at Cai Lan Port which killed eight people on July 15, said a senior police officer.

Initial investigation revealed that the cause of the gantry collapse in the northern province of Quang Ninh was due to a technical error in its installation, said Trinh Quoc Dung, vice head of the province’s Department of Investigative Police on Social Issues.

Dung said that the gantry, which was imported from China for lifting containers on and off ships, was old and had been in use since 1992.

Provincial leaders have decided to offer 2 million VND (110 USD) as assistance to each of the eight victims’ family members while the Lilama Joint Stock Company has offered families 15 million VND (880 USD) each as compensation. Families also received assistance from other local bodies.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on July 17 directed Quang Ninh provincial People’s Committee to look into the incident and ascertain those who were responsible for it.

He also asked them to talk with the families and offer them whatever support was needed. The deputy PM also asked relevant agencies to formulate measures that would prevent such accidents from taking place in the province’s ports.-Enditem
