Int’l Physics Olympiad opens in Hanoi

Hanoi (VNA) – The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) opened in Hanoi on July 21.

Held for the first time in Vietnam , the international science contest has more than 400 students competing from 82 countries and territories. Around 300 teachers and experts have also joined the physics festival.

The winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physics , US scientist Prof. Friedman, is a special guest for this year’s event.

Following the official opening by National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong, Vietnam ’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan welcomed the international guests attending the opening ceremony.

He said the Vietnamese Government places special importance on improving the people’s knowledge and fostering talented people.

The country always searches for young talents in science, including physics, and supports them to develop, Nhan said.

The IPhO Acting President Professor Maija Ahtee thanked the Vietnamese government for their cooperation and organisation of this year’s event.

Vietnam was the first Asian country to join IPhO in 1981 when only 10 countries attended the event, Prof. Maija Ahtee said.

She also praised the host country’s preparations for the contest to take place in accordance with the regulations.

The organising board of the host country include the Ministry of Education and Training, the Vietnam Physics Association and the Hanoi Teachers’ Training College.-Enditem
