UN asked to meet on Cambodian-Thai dispute

22/07/2008 -- 9:43 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – Cambodia has asked the UN Security Council to hold an urgent meeting to discuss the border dispute between the country and Thailand, news reports said.

This was announced by Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong at a meeting in Phnom Penh on July 22, which drew participation of representatives from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU).

The UN meeting would be held on July 28, the minister was quoted by news reports as saying.

Earlier on July 21, Cambodia asked Singapore, the chair of ASEAN, to intervene and find peaceful solution for its current Preah Vihear with Thailand.

The dispute over 1.8 square miles of land near the Preah Vihear temple escalated earlier this month when UNESCO approved Cambodia's application to have the complex named a World Heritage Site. –Enditem
