Thailand rejects ASEAN role in settling border issue

23/07/2008 -- 12:39 PM

Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand has rejected the role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in settling border dispute between the country and Cambodia.

Thailand plans to solve the dispute over the ancient temple of Preah Vihear through bilateral talks, according to sources from the government.

Meanwhile, the Nation daily reported on July 22 afternoon that the United Nations would hold a meeting on July 28 to ease the tension relating to the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia .

The dispute over 1.8 square miles of land near the Preah Vihear temple escalated earlier this month when UNESCO approved Cambodia's application to have the complex named a World Heritage Site.-Enditem
