Peaceful talks remain only solution for Mideast conflicts

23/07/2008 -- 4:25 PM

New York (VNA) – Peaceful negotiations remain the only means to deal with Israel-Palestine and Israel-Arab conflicts, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council, said.

At the UNSC Open Debate on “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestine question” in New York on July 22, the Vietnamese Ambassador called upon the parties concerned to renounce violence, implement agreements, abide by their obligations under international law, particularly human rights and humanitarian laws, and take further concrete action to advance the peace progress towards its stated goals on the basis of the UN resolutions, the principle of land for peace, the Arab Peace Initiative and the Annapolis outcome.

He also stressed the role of international community, especially the UN, the Quartet and regional countries in the search for a solution to the Israeli – Palestinian conflict.

The Vietnamese ambassador appreciated the positive developments in the Middle East, including the engagement of Israel and Palestine in negotiations on final status issues, the strong support at the international conferences in Paris, Bethlehem and Berlin for the establishment of a Palestinian State and the high-level diplomacy initiative and mediation efforts of the Quartet, the League of Arab States and regional countries.

He also noted the tangible progress reached between Israel and relevant parties on cease fires, prisoners’ exchange and praised the Palestine government’s efforts to enhance national unity, security and rule of law, promote foreign investment and pursue socio-economic development reform.

However, the ambassador expressed his concern about Israel ’s continued military incursions into West Bank , its ongoing construction of the separation wall and detention of thousands of Palestinian prisoners.

Regarding Lebanon, Minh underlined the importance of the Doha negotiations and the ongoing mediation efforts of the League of Arabia States and regional countries. He also urged all parties in Lebanon to build on the momentum of national reconciliation and support the newly established national unity government to promote the country’s political stability, socio-economic development and regional and international integration.

In his opinion, parties concerned should strictly follow resolution 1701 to avoid further complicating the situation, thus helping to assert Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and contribute to avoid an improved political and security environment in the region.-Enditem
