Australia, Indonesia cooperate in tsunami prevention

30/07/2008 -- 3:22 PM

Sydney (VNA) – Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology and Indonesia's Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology will begin a partnership in tsunami observation monitoring and assessment in waters between the two countries, local media reported on July 30.

The partnership would increase tsunami detection in the Indian Ocean and could save lives, Australia’s “The Age” newspaper quoted Environment Minister Peter Garrett as saying.

Indonesia would help the bureau maintain its two standard deep-ocean tsunami detection buoys due to be deployed to the north of Western Australia this year, the minister said.

Additionally, the bureau would also procure an easy-to-deploy, deep ocean buoy that would complement Australia 's and Indonesia's tsunami warning systems, he added. –Enditem
