Socio-economic Affairs

· The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) sets a new record with over 77,000 locally-assembled vehicles sold in the first seven months of the year (Tien phong [Vanguard], No. 221, page 1).

· Securities companies shrink down for survival (Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam [Vietnam Economic Times], No. 190, page 9). Due to sharp falls in stock prices in the first seven months, many securities companies have narrowed their operations to save costs.

· Consumption trend will experience a big change (Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam , No. 190, page 12). Consumers turn their eyes on modern distribution channels.

· Cutting down deposit interest rates has become a trend (Thoi bao Ngan hang [Banking Times], No. 95, page 3).

· Vietnam ’s seafood exports to the US in the first six months: grab the chance to enter the large market. (Thoi bao Ngan hang, No. 95, page 9). With nearly 100,000 tonnes of seafood worth over 720 million USD imported from Vietnam in 2007, the US has become the Southeast Asian country’s third largest seafood importer, after the EU and Japan .

· Swallows’ houses (Tuoi tre [Youth], No. 215, page 10). “Hotels” or “maternity hospitals” are built for swallows. Some people opened companies to breed swallows while others invented automatic incubating machines and won prizes at creativeness contests. The industry is booming.

· Gold and US dollar are “unmarketable” (Tuoi tre, No. 215, page 15). The domestic gold market continues sinking due to weak buying power.

· Vietnam’s garment sector is targeting higher rank – jumping from the current top ten to the world’s top five largest garment and textile exporters (Dien dan Doanh nghiep [Business Forum], No.64, page 6).

· Bright colour for shares of garment companies (Dien dan Doanh nghiep, No. 215, page 15). Despite the national and world economies’ difficulties, players still put much hope on the shares from the Vietnamese garment sector thanks to member companies’ satisfactory business results.

· Holding breath! (Dau tu [Investment], No. 95, page 1) A number of seaport projects with a total investment capital of up to 1 billion USD are awaiting for completion of infrastructure works.

· The unemployment rate may slightly increase this year (Dau tu, No. 95, page 3). An interview with Doan Mau Diep, Director of the Labour and Social Science Institute, on the risk of increasing unemployment rate and measures to ensure social welfares.
