Hospitals to prevent bacterial contamination

Hanoi (VNA) – Investment in solid waste and sewage treatment systems and setting a hygienic standard were some of the measures proposed by the health care sector to control bacterial contamination at hospitals. Other solutions, put forth at a seminar in Hanoi on August 13 on mapping out a programme on bacterial infection control in the 2008-2009 period, included upgrading hospital infrastructure and equipment, and increasing management over the prevention work. An expert from the Health Ministry, Nguyen Bich Luu, said apart from the above-mentioned measures, training personnel in the field is also an important solution. A survey conducted by the Health Ministry at 454 hospitals showed that nearly 45 percent of the heads of bacterial infection prevention wards at district hospitals have not yet undergone training in the area. Luu said to help strengthen the prevention work, all heads of the bacterial contamination wards at hospitals must be trained in the field as a major. The seminar, held by the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Vietnam Sanatorium Association and the World Health Organisation, is aimed at evaluating hospitals’ activities in controlling bacterial contamination and drafting a plan on the work for the 2008-2009 period.
