RoK’s NGOs continue food aid to DPR of Korea

20/08/2008 -- 9:35 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – The Republic of Korea’s non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have sent 31.8 billion won (30.3 million USD) worth of aid to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) over the first seven months of this year.

The amount is slightly larger than the 31.2 billion won aid a year ago, they said, adding that the figures exclude government subsides, Yonhap news agency reported.

The aid from RoK’s non-governmental groups included 4,000 tonnes of grain, RoK’s Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Ho-nyoun was quoted by news reports on August 20.

RoK’s NGOs have continued their steady stream of aid to the DPRK despite a recent chill in inter-Korean relations, the spokesman added.

The country’s food aid to the DPRK has been suspended since President Lee Myung Bak, who promised a firmer line with Pyongyang, took office in late February.

The RoK previously provided the DPRK with about 400,000 tonnes of rice and 300,000 tonnes of fertiliser each year, technically in the form of a loan. But it says it will not make the shipments until the North requests them.-Enditem
