21/08/2008 -- 8:58 PM

Bangkok (VNA) – The Mekong River Commission (MRC) will meet in Laos on August 27 and 28 with a focus on a bid for information from China regarding the country’s management of sluice gates on the Mekong River ’s upper reaches.

At the meeting, Thailand will officially ask China for cooperation in providing details on its sluice gates management because without such information, Thailand and other lower basin countries would face with flooding, according to the MRC.

Thai Deputy Interior Minister Prasong Kositanond said that some areas in Thailand and other sub-Mekong regional countries are inundated.

MRC's Thailand coordinator, Burachat Buasuwan said MRC countries should cooperate in providing alarming in the rainy season.

The MRC was established in 1995 by an agreement between governments of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam . Two upper states of the Mekong River Basin - China and Myanmar - are dialogue partners to the MRC.-Enditem
