· Vinafood 2 built a catfish processing plant in southern Tra Vinh province (Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam [Vietnam Economic Times], No. 201, page 1).

· “Tra” catfish were “saved” (Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam , No. 201, page 3. According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Luong Le Phuong, by mid-August, there were only about 90,000 tonnes of the fishes and fish weighed 1kg in stock. New markets such as Russia , the Middle East and some Asian countries have increased the import of Vietnam ’s “tra” and “basa” catfish. Processing plants have doubled their capacity and are expected to use up the material by the end of August.

· First negotiation on Vietnam-US bilateral investment agreement (BIT) is going to be held (Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam , No. 201, page 6). An interview with US Ambassador Michael W. Michalak.

· Gaps in environmental management (Tuoi tre [Youth], No. 228, page 3). Though having more environmental experts, applying advanced technology and pouring more investment in environment, Ho Chi Minh City ’s environment remains more polluted than it was 10 years ago, said Doctor Hoang Anh Tuan, deputy head of the municipal Union of Science and Technology Associations.

· Asian Zither Festival will be held in Ho Chi Minh City from September 1-4 after 8 years since its first organisation (Tuoi tre, No. 228, page 12).

· Prices in Ho Chi Minh City cooled down (Cong Thuong [Industry and Trade], No. 42, page 7). Prices of essential commodities, such as gas, fish, meat, vegetables and steel as well as services reduced after a long period of increase.

· One year after the issuance of the Finance Ministry’s Decision No. 27, only 13 out of 80 securities companies have transferred investors’ accounts to banks for management.
